We are currently running three projects in early breast cancer:
TARGIT: TARGETED INTRA-OPERATIVE RADIATION THERAPY
TARGIT is an international randomised clinical trial designed to test the hypothesis that
the strategy of delivering a single dose of targeted intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT)
in patients eligible for breast conserving therapy (with the addition of whole breast
radiotherapy in those patients at high risk of recurrence elsewhere in the breast [eg lobular
carcinomas and extensive intraduct component]) is equivalent to a conventional course of
post-operative external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). The primary endpoints are local and
loco-regional recurrence rates.

ATAC: A RANDOMISED, DOUBLE-BLIND TRIAL COMPARING ARIMIDEX ALONE WITH NOLVADEX ALONE WITH ARIMIDEX AND NOLVADEX IN COMBINATION AS ADJUVANT TREATMENT IN POST-MENOPAUSAL WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER
This trial, performed in collaboration with AstraZeneca, aims to compare the effectiveness
of Arimidex (an aromatase inhibitor), tamoxifen, or the combination of both in terms of
recurrence and survival in post-menopausal women with operable breast cancer. A proportion
of patients have participated in sub-protocols, namely Quality of Life, Endometrial Changes,
Pharmacokinetics and Bone Mineral Density. The study is now closed to recruitment, with more
than 9300 women in 21 countries.

TA/01: Translational Research on the ATAC Trial
TA/01 (also known as TransATAC), an accompanying translational research
study to the ATAC (Anastrozole, Tamoxifen, Alone and or Combination) trial (see
above), is an international study inviting all ATAC
centres to participate in the formation of a tissue resource.
